By the Power of Grayskull! The He-Man Beat 'em Up We’ve Always Dreamed Of
Fans of
He-Man and the Masters of the Universe
grew up hoping for a video game that truly lived up to the franchise, but its history in this medium has been, unfortunately, very limited and often marked by mediocre titles.
However, that landscape is about to change drastically with the arrival of
He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: Dragon Pearl of Destruction.
This new title, developed by Bitmap Bureau and Limited Run Games,
promises to be the arcade
beat ’em up
that the community has always yearned to see in the arcades.
In fact, it has everything it takes to become the definitive video game in the
Masters of the Universe saga.
The Key Strengths: A Studio That Knows Exactly What It’s Doing
The primary guarantee of quality lies in the development team, Bitmap Bureau. This British studio is well-known for its expertise in the genre, especially thanks to its work on titles like Final Vendetta and Battle Axe.
Bitmap Bureau has remained faithful to retro gameplay formulas, always built upon an unwavering foundation of exceptional 2D craftsmanship. While He-Man is their second licensed project (they are also behind the promising Terminator game), their classic approach allows them to play to their strengths: bringing back “beat ’em up” action with impeccable art.
The game will feature up to 12 levels narrating an original Masters of the Universe story, and most importantly, it will offer co-op action. Players can join He-Man with confirmed companions like Teela the Sorceress and Duncan (Man-At-Arms). In addition to confirmed combos, skills, and powers —such as the ability to summon a massive dragon that scorches enemies— we will see He-Man riding Battle Cat!
The Visual Style: From Cartoon to Pixel Art
Visually, Dragon Pearl of Destruction is a direct and nostalgic tribute. Its trailer begins by honoring the original action figures and their classic TV commercials.
The game utilizes high-quality sprite-based art with a clear cartoon aesthetic, blending the style of the original animated series with pixel art that results in “spectacular character models.” The game is packed with references to the classic show. For instance, comparison videos have shown the perfect recreation of Prince Adam raising the Sword of Power to transform into He-Man, and Cringer’s transformation into Battle Cat.
The beat ’em up 2D genre, where players traverse environments fighting off hordes of enemies, was particularly popular during the 1980s.
He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: Dragon Pearl of Destruction joins the glorious tradition of titles such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Streets of Rage, utilizing that gameplay mechanic that inevitably evokes nostalgia.
The new game doesn’t just build on the classic “beat ’em up” foundation; it also includes more than appropriate nods to other genre greats, such as Golden Axe. Thanks to Bitmap Bureau’s expertise in 2D and retro fidelity, this title is expected to stand alongside these iconic benchmarks.
What is the Best He-Man Game to Date?
While the track record of Masters of the Universe on consoles has generally been underwhelming, there is one notable exception that currently holds the title of the best video game in the saga: He-Man: The Most Powerful Game in the Universe.
Released in 2012 for iOS and Android, this 2D action, platformer, and puzzle title successfully captured what made the franchise great in the 1980s. In it, He-Man fought against Skeletor’s hordes across 7 regions of Eternia with the help of allies like the Sorceress, Orko, and Man-At-Arms.
Although it is no longer available on app stores, this game possessed a charm reminiscent of classics like Gunstar Heroes, offering a delightful and solid adventure that outshone the rest of the saga.
He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: Dragon Pearl of Destruction aims to change that narrative, and with its release scheduled for 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC, it seems that, at last, we will be able to shout “I HAVE THE POWER!” with a controller in hand and true nostalgic joy.
